Does this smell funny to you?

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day! Yay!

Small (but thoughtful) gift ready to go… check!

Plans to have Mr. Charles cover the shop… check!

Movie times and lunch spot scouted…check!

Wait. What’s missing? *forehead slap. Mom’s Happy Mother’s Day card! Bleh.

Here at Gifted I am the resident lover of all things paper and paper related. I will pay any price to rescue bags of long ignored vintage greeting cards at yard sales because I feel indignant at the neglect they have experienced. I literally grimace like a pissed off octogenarian whenever a commercial for one of those instruments of cultural death (you may know them by names such as the “kindle” and “iPad”) come on the TV. I have special pieces of design paper that I will never ever use because I’m down to the last piece, love it too much and now it will forever-more live in my Paper Hall of Fame/Museum. I look longingly, almost inappropriately at pictures of 1800’s letterpress machines and vintage type blocks not unlike how a middle aged man would look at a cherry nineteen sixty-something Mustang.  I was secretly grateful when our mailbox was robbed (okay, maybe not grateful) for the second time and we decided to open a P.O. Box because the post office is where SO much paper lives…. and it SMELLS like it. Yes, I admit it. If I had to list the top five reasons why I love paper so damn much… number one with a bullet would be the smell. Amen and Amen.

So I hope that terrifying peek into my paper obsession love helps to illustrate to you why it is so damn sad and pathetic that I do not have a single handmade card on display here at the shop.

Which probably leads you back to that *forehead slap and leaves you wondering how on earth I could possibly not have a card made for Mom! I know, I know. It’s my secret shame and disappointment that in reality I am usually too busy with customers, bookkeeping and a myriad of other “grown-up business owner” responsibilities to attempt working on my own projects to sell here at the shop. That being said, Mom still deserves her heartwarming, gratitude conveying, tear jerking Mother’s Day card, dammit! What makes it worse is I always feel guilty giving store-bought cards because… well… I’m the paper lover that wants to design my own greeting card line and can’t even get enough made to sell here in our humble store. *sigh.

Which why I decided today was going to be the day I would finally open the letterpress kit that I bought over a year ago and USE IT to make my loving Mother her card!

I skimmed the directions assembled the intended project and finally dove on in to my own little moment of paper joyfulness.

Not too shabby for a first try. When they say a little of the ink goes a long way… they are not joking. Speaking of ink…

…you know what smells almost as good as paper? Yes my friends. Letterpress ink.
Happy Mother’s Day everyone 🙂
